As the founder of the multi-disciplined public affairs media and strategic consulting firm, The Nussle Group, Nussle provides insight and strategy on public policy, politics and current events.
One of the issues Nussle has championed for many years is America’s energy independence. As the current president and chief operating officer of Growth Energy, a trade association made up of American ethanol companies and industry partners who are committed to the promise of growing America’s economy through renewable energy, Nussle focuses his efforts developing creative policy approaches and proactive grassroots advocacy.
Mr. Nussle received his B.A. in Political Science, Economics and International studies from Luther College and his law degree from Drake University. He serves on the boards of Avista Capital Partners, the Committee for Responsible Federal Budget, National Down Syndrome Society, Project for National Security Reform, and Rebuilding Together.
As a former United States Congressman from Iowa, chairman of a powerful House Committee and member of the president’s cabinet, Nussle has a perspective of Washington, D.C. that is matched by few. Serving in the cabinet of President George W. Bush as the Director of the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB), Nussle was the chief executive officer of the agency that is responsible for the successful development, enactment and implementation of the president’s fiscal agenda, regulatory priorities and functions as the “clearing agency” for all Administration policy decisions and official communication on behalf of the president.
During his service at the White House, Nussle also served as an advisor to the president as a member of the National Economic Council, National Security Council, Homeland Security Council and National Domestic Policy Council.
Prior to his executive branch service, for 16 years Nussle represented Iowa in the U.S. House of Representatives where he earned a reputation as an effective and accomplished leader and “fiscal hawk”. In Congress he served on the Budget, Ways and Means, Agriculture and Banking Committees becoming an expert on such issues taxes, finance, world trade, health care and energy.
In 2001, Nussle was elected by his peers to three straight two year terms as the chairman of the influential House Budget Committee. He was successful in drafting and shepherding six consecutive federal budgets through Congress that initially provided a surplus, reduced taxes and the national debt, while addressing some of the most challenging and turbulent security and economic times our country has ever faced.
Nussle and his wife Karen, president and CEO of Ripple Communications, have two adult children, Sarah and Mark, and reside today in Alexandria, Virginia. |
